     Dorthea Melissa Clifford, 86, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local 
care facility on Thursday, July 15, 2004.
     She was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Portland, the oldest of two children to 
Irving and Estelle (Brace) Dill. She was raised in The Dalles, graduating from 
The Dalles High School as Salutatorian in the Class of 1936.
     She married Elmer Leon Clifford on Sept. 24, 1939, in The Dalles. they 
lived in The Dalles, moved to San Diego during WWII and returned to settle in 
The Dalles.
     She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the ladies 
church auxiliary for over 50 years and The Dalles Lion’s Club Auxiliary. She 
loved spending time with her family and enjoyed bridge, golfing and in later 
years, traveling with her husband and friends.
     She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Steward, Menlo Park, CA; Leslie 
Clifford, Portland; two grandchildren, Meghan and her husband, Jonathan Lang, 
Santa Barbara, CA; Malea and her husband, Peter Smith, Del Mar, CA; three 
great-grandchildren, Nathan and Audrey Lang and Catherine Smith; two nephews, 
Gerald and Dennis Barton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, in 
May 1997 and her sister, Dolores, in 2001.
     Graveside services will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights 
Road on Monday, July 19, 2004 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tracy M. Browning and 
the Rt. Rev. Rusty Kimsey officiating. Smith Callaway Chapel is in care of 
arrangements.
     Memorials may be made to Port City, 2124 Williams Ave., Portland, OR, 
97214, in the name of Leslie Clifford.
