Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:55 am The Dalles Chronicle, October 21, 2005 Chester “Chet” Claud Coats, 89, a former resident of Wasco, died at a local care facility on Oct. 19, 2005. He was born June 22, 1916, in Rufus, the oldest of eight children to Claud Edmund and Mary Ellen “Ella” (Clark) Coats. He graduated from Rufus High School in 1933 at age 16. He attended Willamette University and Oregon Agricultural College. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from Oct. 1, 1941 to Oct. 27, 1945. He spent two years stationed stateside learning and then teaching radio code and then was stationed for two years in the South Pacific. He married Reatha Sayrs on Oct. 10, 1942 in Chicago, where he was stationed at the time. He returned to Sherman County following discharge from the service, and was a wheat farmer from 1946 to 1983. He lived in Wasco from 1946 to 2005, was a member of the Wasco School Board, Sherman Co-op Board, Intermediate Education District Board, was a volunteer for the Sherman County Historical Society for many years, and was instrumental in cataloging their museum photography collection. He loved flying and earned his pilot’s license in the 1950s, loved to travel, was an avid photographer, and participated in many shows and displays. He enjoyed attending Air Force Reunions and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved his wife’s gooseberry pie. He is survived by his wife, Reatha Coats, The Dalles; his two sons, Tom Coats and his wife Karen, The Dalles; Don Coats and his wife Brenda, The Dalles; his three daughters, Mary Macnab and her husband Bo, Wasco; Pat Jacobsen and her husband Erling, Rufus; Margie Stovall and her husband Eric, The Dalles; grandchildren, Christopher Conlee, Jill Harrison, Paula Costanzo, Callie and Piper Macnab, Meghan McAllister and John Coats, Sol Jacobsen and Sarah Cerallo, Graham, Mason and Vanessa Coats, Brandon and Cameron Ferguson, Lael Erickson, Jesse, Riley and Emily Stovall; 9 great-grandchildren; his three sisters, Lois Haskell, McMinnville; Nell Melzer, Moro; and Mary Eakin, The Dalles; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Anne Beck, Ida Rutschman; two brothers Jim Coats and Bill Coats. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Wasco United Methodist Church, Wasco. Luncheon will be provided following the service. Private cremation was held at Win-Quatt Crematory in The Dalles. Private burial (of cremains) will be at a later date at Wasco Sunrise Cemetery.
