The Dalles Chronicle, March 10, 2005
     Dorothy Ellen Cushman, 92, a lifelong resident of The Dalles, died at a 
local care facility on Friday, March 4, 2005.
     She was born Sept. 30, 1912, in The Dalles, the oldest of four children 
to Frank J. and Florence Livinnia (Beam) Thomas. She attended Old West End, 
Court Street and The Dalles High School.
     She married Walter L. Cushman on Aug. 5, 1930 in Stevenson, just five 
months after meeting on his 21st birthday, March 24, 1930.
     She was a dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she involved 
many of her grandchildren in services. 
     She was an avid reader of spiritual literature and enjoyed cooking, 
taking long walks and animals. 
     She took pride in homemaking.
     She is survived by two sons, John Thomas Cushman, Portland; and Daniel 
Paul Cushman, The Dalles; her grandchildren, Mark, David, Patrick, Jody, Wendy 
and Frank Jr., Anthony, Benjamin and DeeAnn Cushman; numerous great-
grandchildren, two sisters, Irene Spickerman, The Dalles and Ruth Mathews, 
Madras. 
     She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cushman; her sister, 
Helen; her son, Francis; and two daughters, Helen B. and Gertrude Ann.
     Memorial services will be held at a later date. Contact the Cushmans at

Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and 
Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
