He was born July 7, 1914, in Byron, Minn. He attended elementary and high school in Byron and then attended the University of Minnesota school of Agriculture from 1932 to 1934 and the College of Agriculture from 1934-35. He graduated second in his class from the school of Agriculture. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota with a major in history and a minor in psychology and art. He attended Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., and obtained a Master of Divinity Degree in 1965. He served United Methodist churches in Tygh Valley and Dufur from 1965 to 1969, Heppner and Echo 1969-76 and Coquille 1976-80. He served on the Board of Ordained Ministry in the Oregon-Idaho conference of the United Methodist Church. Survivors include sons Ernest and his wife, Beth, Minneapolis, Todd and his wife Charlotte, Rockport, Texas, Robert and his wife, Frances Joan, Long Beach, Miss., and Craig and his wife, April, Albany; two daughters, Rebecca and her husband, Frank Guitterez, Canby, and Vanessa Bruer, Milwaukie; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph; and 26 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Everstine Cutting and Mary Inez King Cutting; a brother, Clyde Raymond Cutting; a son-in-law, Kevin Bruer; and his wife, Doris Emily Whitcomb, whom he married on Aug. 21, 1937. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Untied Methodist Church in Oak Grove. Simon Woodburn Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements.
