He was born July 9, 1921, in Stewart, Okla., the oldest of 12 children to Lonnie E. and Lula Pearl (Knight) Dawkins and was a member of Chickasaw Native American Indian Nation. He was raised in Oklahoma and married Bertha May Kincaid on July 26, 1937, in Anteir, Okla. They moved to the Zillah, Wash. area and he entered the U.S. Army in July 1944. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and received the Purple Heart Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star. After his discharge, he returned to the Zillah area and then to The Dalles in 1947. He worked in cherry farming and for many years worked as foreman for Treaty Oak Orchards on Mill Creek Road. He enjoyed all outdoor activities including hunting elk, deer and trapping. Lonnie is survived by his daughter, Luetta M. and her husband Ted Barrier; daughter-in-law, Patsy Marine Dawkins, all of The Dalles; four grandchildren, Bart and his wife, Kathy Dawkins, Laurie Dawkins, Corey and his wife, Michele Bardes, all of The Dalles, Marie and her husband, Daniel J. Bardes, Portland; great-grandchildren, Coleman, Devon, Rachel, Audra, Christopher, Josh, Jayme, Nick and Riley; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Dezirae; three sisters, Joyce DeLaughter and Nina Dunn, both of Portland and Kathleen Lake, Boise, Idaho; two brothers, Stan Dawkins, Portland, Edman Dawkins, The Dalles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha, in 1984, two brothers, Melvin and Roland; four sisters, Wilma, Loraine, Matty and Leola, and his son, Doyle Lee Dawkins, in 1987. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Friday, July 9, 2004 from 2 to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9 a.m. through services. Services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at 1 p.m. with J.W. and Wesley Jepson officiating. Interment will follow at Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 1112 West 9th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
