Luis Gonzales GONZALES, Luis, 23, a resident of Seattle (Washington) died at the local hospital (The Dalles), Wednesday, January 1, 2003. (Columbia Cremation & Burial). Autopsy Scheduled After Cruise Ship Musician Dies The Dalles Chronicle, Thursday, January 2, 2003 by Rodger Nichols of the Chronicle, Front Page A young member of a band employed by the Queen of the West cruise ship died aboard ship on New Year's Day. According to Oregon State Police Detective Fred Hawkins, the 23-year-old male was found unconscious Wednesday afternoon. "Other members of the band became concerned when they hadn't seen him for a while. They found him unconscious in a shower stall, and started CPR." The victim was identified by the funeral home as Luis Gonzales, a resident of the Seattle area. Hawkins said at the time the discovery was made, the ship was cruising downriver east of The Dalles Dam. "They were about 20 minutes away from Maryhill State Park, in Sherman County (Oregon)," he said. The ship docked at the park, where it was met by Klickitat County (Washington) ambulance service, who transported the man to Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, where he was pronounced dead. Wasco County Sheriff's deputies assisted the Oregon State Police at the scene, initially treating it as a potential crime scene, said Wasco County Sheriff's Detective Sergeant Rick Eiesland. But he said there were no overt indications of any trauma to the body. He said an autopsy had been ordered. The 163-passenger paddle-wheeler Queen of the West, built in 1994, is owned by America West Steamship Company, based in Seattle. The incident occurred on the fifth day of a sever-day cruise that began December 28 in Portland and featured a trip from Portland up the Columbia to the Snake River and Hell's Canyon.
