Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:41 pm The Dalles Chronicle, December 13, 2005 Katherine M. Eakin, 94, a resident of Goldendale, died at the hospital in that city on Dec. 10, 2005. She was born March 15, 1911, the fifth of nine children to Diederich and Dorathea (Patjens) Reckmann on the family farm near Grass Valley. She attended grade school at the Michigan School near the farm and at Kent, then worked for her board and room in Portland where she attended high school, graduating from Girls Polytechnic High School in January 1930. On Sept. 6, 1931, she and Ralph Eakin, son of pioneer parents V. B. and Fay V. (Blaylock) Eakin were married in the garden of her parents’ home. They lived and ranched near Moro in Sherman County until moving onto a ranch they purchased in the Igo District of Gilliam County in 1951, continuing in farming until retiring to Condon in 1975 where they lived until 1994. Since that year they have lived in The Dalles, Adams and Goldendale. In 1989 she and Ralph served as grand marshals of the Gilliam County Fair being honored for their participation and support of the Gilliam County Fair and 4H programs. She helped start Home Extension clubs in Gilliam County and held leadership positions. She also served on the advisory board helping to select the topics of study which would be of interest to rural homemakers. She was a member of the Condon Garden Club that was started in 1989. In 1989 she won the sweepstakes award for her wheat rolls at the Gilliam County Fair. Survivors include daughters, Joan and her husband, Henry J. Jaeger, Moro; and Mildred and her husband, Alvin J. Hughes, Goldendale; a son, Gordon and wife, Peggy (Couture), Adams; nine grandchildren, John Jaeger and his wife, Elizabeth, Corvallis; Ann and her husband, Steven Irvin, Lincoln City; Beth Hughes, Live Oak, Texas; Mark Hughes and his wife, Cheryl, Louisville, Ky.; Matt Hughes and his wife, Carmela, Arlington; Tracy and her husband, Christopher, Hermiston; Kelly Jo Eakin, Montana; Christine Ezell, Adams; and Becky Eakin, Haines; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry Reckmann, Boring; sisters-in-law, Patsy Reckman, Sandy; Oma Eakin, Bend; Marguerite Eakin, Lebanon; Mary Eakin, The Dalles; and Ellen Haskins, Grangeville, Idaho; several cousins, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Eakin in August of 2001, her parents, four brothers and three sisters. Services will be held at the Condon Church of Christ on Friday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Kimberly Meinecke and Rev. Lauren Allen officiating. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital, United Church of Christ at Condon, Faith Lutheran Church at Goldendale, Sherman County Historical Society at Moro or Gilliam County Historical Society at Condon. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.
