He was born Aug. 5, 1917 in Grass Valley, at the family farm where his parents had homesteaded. He was the seventh of eight children born to Volando Biddle and Faye V. (Blaylock) Eakin. He graduated from Grass Valley High School and then attended Diesel Vocational School in Seattle. He married Mary W. Coats May 4, 1941 in Wasco. They lived and farmed on the family farm, raising wheat and cattle until his retirement in the late 90’s, moving to The Dalles in November 1997. Elton enjoyed visiting with people, the outdoors including hunting every year with his brother, Harold, and other friends. In his younger years he enjoyed steelhead fishing on the Deschutes and deep sea fishing. He was proud of his Hereford livestock and the many calves turned into great 4-H and FFA Champions over the years. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great- grandchildren, his wife’s piano playing and taking day trips. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary W. Eakin, The Dalles; son, Ronald C. Eakin, Hermiston; daughter, Helen R. Eakin, Spokane, Wash.; daughter- in-law, Martha Flatt; four grandchildren, Michelle, Randy, Cathy and Ryan; 10 great-grandchildren and a sister, Ellen Haskin, Grangeville, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Frances Mary; sons, John Elton and Leonard Earl; six brothers, Alva, Harold, Millard, Ralph, Vernon and Owen. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Friday, from 9 to 11 a.m. Graveside committal services will be held at Rose Cemetery in Moro on Friday Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. Memorial services will follow at Moro Presbyterian Church on Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Richard Keeney officiating. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Sherman County Historical Society, PO Box 178, Moro, OR 97039.
