He was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Des Moines, Iowa, the youngest of three children to James and Grace Marie (Morgan) Earl. He was raised in Des Moines, and moved to Grass Valley when he was 17. He returned to Des Moines, and married Melva Marie Gooch on Sept. 1, 1951, in Carlisle, Iowa. They farmed near Grass Valley raising wheat and cattle. He enjoyed trying new technologies. During the 50’s and 60’s he operated a mobile television and radio repair service in the Mid-Columbia. He also was a licensed amateur radio operator and purchased one of the first home computers in the Northwest. He enjoyed programming applications for both the farm and his children’s education. He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church, Grass Valley, and had served in its leadership, and on the boards of Judson Baptist College and Conservative Baptist Northwest. He is survived by his wife, Melva Earl, Grass Valley; his daughter, Debra and her husband, Bruce Bates, Condon; three sons, Donald “Stan” Earl; David and his wife, Terri Earl and Daniel Earl, all of Grass Valley; 10 grandchildren, Carolyn and her husband, Travis Emery; Adam and Thomas Bates; Amy, Matthew, Steven, Nathaniel Dean, Jason, Kenny and Rebecca Earl; one great- granddaughter, Kelsey Emery; his mother, Grace Marie Earl, Grass Valley; his brother, Richard Earl, Eugene. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Wendell, and by his father, James, in 1985. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Thursday morning from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Graveside interment services will be held at the Grass Valley Cemetery on Thursday, April 8, at 11 a.m. Memorial services will follow at First Baptist Church, Grass Valley at noon with Pastor Richard Keeney officiating. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Grass Valley First Baptist Church, PO Box 26, Grass Valley, Oregon 97029.
