She was born January 27, 1916 in Springfield, Colo., the sixth of twelve children to William A. and Blanche (Wells) Riggs and grew up on the family farm on the eastern slope of the Colorado Rockies. She married Preston Uri Hotchkiss in 1935 and moved with him to several towns in Colorado, including Colona and Ridgeway, where she worked in the school cafeteria until the stillbirth of her daughter Angelina in 1943. Her second child, Nancy Elaine was born in 1945 and her third, Sandra Eloise, was born in 1953. The family lived in Wolf Creek Pass, Highway Camp, and Ignacio before finally settling in Durango where they bought a home. Following a divorce in 1962 she raised her daughters by working as a retail clerk in several businesses in Durango. After visiting her brother Hurshel and his family in Wasco in 1975 she moved to The Dalles and worked at Columbia Park State Hospital & Training Center until it closed. She met Howard O. Eaton here and they married in 1976. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in The Dalles and had been a member of the local Rebekah chapter, affiliated with the I.O.O.F. An exceptional seamstress, she enjoyed making clothes for her daughters and others. She was a wonderful cook and gardener, and her garden produced bountiful harvests which she canned, winning several prizes at local fairs in the cooking, canning, and garden produce divisions. She was an excellent shot with a rifle and enjoyed hunting with both her husbands, generally getting her game animal. She also protected her chicken flock from hawks and other predators. She loved dogs, and had several named Corky with whom she enjoyed morning walks, becoming well-known in her neighborhood. She loved dancing and people-watching and enjoyed good health and an active social life until developing Alzheimer’s, which necessitated her last few years in a local care center. Survivors include her daughters and their families; Nancy E. Brown and her husband Kelly, The Dalles; and Sandra Tyrell, Wash.; brothers and sisters and their families; Margret Warner and husband Jack, Betty M. Stevens, Woodrow and Frances Riggs, Thurman and Helen Riggs and numerous nieces and nephews in Colo. Also surviving are grandchildren Yoyonda K. Burnett, Steven Uri Wade, Kyle E. Pratt, Kishia LaDawn Sewell, Cynthia and Evan Tyrell and several great- grandchildren, including Ryan and Thomas, The Dalles. In addition to her first daughter she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and a sister and her husbands. In accordance with her wishes, no public services will be held. Her family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the placement of her ashes. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s research c/o OHSU, 3181 S.W.
