Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 21, 2006, 1:24 pm The Dalles Chronicle, March 22, 2006 Evelyn Jean Rosie Egbert, 89, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Sunday, March 19, 2006. She was born in Wrentham, on Jan. 3, 1917 the second of three daughters to Herbert Edmond and Estella Irene (Campbell) Roe. Her family moved to The Dalles in June of that year and she has been a resident ever since. She graduated with the class of 1935 at The Dalles, High. During high school she was a seamstress for JC Penny’s in The Dalles. Her father was the “Clerk of the Works” (janitor) for School District 12. She married Homer Edmund Egbert in The Dalles on Aug. 31, 1935 at First Christian Church. They were owners and operators of a local business “Egbert’s Tasty Bakery” from 1956 to 1972. She was baptized a member of the First Christian Church in 1928, and remained a member all these years. Her parents were caretakers of Fort Dalles Museum and they lived in the surgeon’s quarters from 1927-1930. She was a supporter of Fort Dalles Museum, Civic Auditorium, the Natatorium restoration, Wasco County Discovery Center. She was part of a group called “Thirties Girls,” and a supporter of Northwest Christian College, The Dalles Mural Society, Habitat for Humanity, and St. Peters Landmark. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed oil and water painting, all sorts of traveling, and decorating for holidays. She has recently lived with her daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and great granddaughter, at 507 W. 3rd Place, The Dalles, a house that her father designed for the Patterson sisters in 1937. She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Harold and Carmen Egbert, Myron and Dawn Egbert, Charlene and Randy Banta, all of The Dalles; her grandchildren, Micheal Egbert, Bend, and his three children; Colleen Tooke, LaGrande, and her three children; Sally Ward, Las Vegas and her two children; Kelly Schunk and her child, Gary Schunk and Morgan Egbert, all of The Dalles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Edmund Egbert in 1982; her grandson, Philip Egbert, in 1987, and her two sisters, Eleanor and Gladys. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church 909 Court St, The Dalles, with Pastor Mike Wilson officiating. Burial to follow at IOOF Cemetery, Cherry Heights Road, The Dalles. Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2 to 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 23, 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Spencer, Libby & Powell Chapel.
