James "Jim" Leroy Ekard, 70, a resident of Grass Valley (Oregon) died at a 
local hospital in The Dalles, on Thursday, March 20, 2003.

Jim was born March 6, 1933, in Marysville, Kansas, the younger of two children 
to Edward and Myrtle (Harden) Ekard. He lived in LaGrange, Wyoming before moving 
to Toppenish, Washington, where he graduated from high school.

He served in the U.S. Army, then returned to Toppenish, where he ranched and 
worked at Grandview Packing. In 1996, he moved to Oregon, and started managing 
motels and had worked in Florence (Oregon) and Moro (Oregon). He enjoyed all 
types of birds and wildlife, the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his special companion of thirty years, Brenda L. Higgins, 
Grass Valley; his son, James Tyler Ekard and his wife, Kerri and their children,
T.J. and Randi, all of Melba, Idaho; stepsons, Rick Cunningham and his wife, 
Annie, Portland and David Cunningham and wife, Karen, Grass Valley; step 
grand-children, Tina, Angela, Kattie, Chelsie and David; great grandson, Gavin; 
his sister, Marcella Veneable, Yakima, Washington and his poodle dog, Frankie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and in 1995, a son, Brett Ekard.

Memorial services and potluck will be held at Grass Valley Rebekah Lodge at 
1 p.m. on Monday, March 24. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt
Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
