The Dalles Weekly Reminder, January 26, 1996
     Ray R. Ellsworth, a resident of Dufur since 1979, died Jan. 21 at a local 
care center.  He was 87.
     His parents, Manuel and Irene (Loe) Ellsworth homesteaded in Klickitat 
Valley in 1902, and Ray was born April 12, 1908 in Goldendale, the ninth of 
eleven children.
     He grew up in Goldendale until age 13, when he started doing seasonal 
field and harvest work in Oregon.
     He married Edna Jane Sawyer in Vancouver, Wash., on March 23, 1931.  They 
lived in Bend for several years, while Ray worked at a sawmill.   In 1943, Ray 
started work in the Willamette Iron and Steel Shipyards in Portland.
     Following the war, he drove produce truck until 1957, when he started 
with Milwaukie-North Clackamas School District Transportation.  He retired as 
Superintendent of Transportation for the school district in 1974.
     Mr. Ellsworth enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, camping, bird 
watching and vegetable gardening.
     He is survived by his wife, Edna, of Dufur; daughter, LaVelle Clampitt, 
of Dufur; son, Loren Ellsworth, of Mulino; four grandchildren; four great-
grandchildren; sisters, Doris Robison of Portland and Lois Perry of Vancouver; 
brother, Jack Ellsworth of Vancouver; and numerous nieces and nephews.
     At his request, no funeral services will be held.
     Memorials:  Dufur Ambulance Fund, sent in care of Spencer, Libby & Powell 
Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles, OR 97058.
