He was born Jan. 8, 1954 in Medford; a son of Franklin and Mary (Baumgardner) Elrod. Following his schooling, he became a logger, and logged extensively in California. On Aug. 11, 1984, he married Dixie Lee Claflin in Hood River. The couple moved to Brookings in October 2001. He devoted much of his time and energies to the spiritual care of the area’s children. He had worked as a missionary for Child Evangelism Fellowship for the last five years. He was a member of the First Baptist Community Church in Brookings, where he had served as a deacon, youth group leader, and had taught Sunday School for senior high students. He enjoyed computers, fishing, hunting, reading, and sports of all kinds. He enjoyed working with young people, and had served as a volunteer coach for Curry Youth Football for two years. Survivors include his wife Dixie, Harbor; three sons, Allen Elrod and Steven Elrod, Brookings and Gregg Elrod Jr., Nevada; mother, Mary “Allene” Elrod, Medford; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Carol Elrod, Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and David West, Arizona; one nephew and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial donations in Gregg’s name may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, P.O. Box 6175, Brookings, OR 97415. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept 24, at the First Baptist Community Church, 607 Pacific, Brookings, with his best friend, Eric Osborne officiating. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel & Crematory.
