Evans, 86, long time resident of The Dalles and Mosier, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at the Oregon Veterans Home. She was born Oct. 25, 1919 in Ethan, S.D., the oldest of five children to Henry D. and Lydia Rumbolz. She was raised on a farm near Ethan and in the 1940s moved to The Dalles where she worked as a receptionist for Dr. John Gilhousen. She married Forrest D. Evans, Sept. 11, 1953 and for 25 years farmed, by his side, a small orchard in Mosier Valley until his death in 1978. She is best known for the many years she, with her family, operated Evans Fruit Stand next to the Hi-Way House restaurant in The Dalles. She was an active member of The Dalles Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She found joy in her faith, her family, and the many friendships she formed in her years at the fruit stand. She is survived by her son, Forrest Jr. and wife Raegan, Mosier; her daughter, Lydia Gardner and husband Jon, Hood River; her grandsons, Samuel Evans and wife Amanda, Mosier; and Casey Evans, Keystone, Colo.; her great- grandchildren, Lydia and Drew Evans, Mosier; her brother, Richard Rumbolz, Salem; her sisters, Dorothy Gray, The Dalles; and Ruth Huffman, Sweet Home; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Forrest, her parents and a sister, Wanda Heinz. At her request a private burial will be held at Mosier Cemetery.
