Wakley iwakley@msn.com and August 3, 2006, 1:14 am The Dalles Chronicle, May 23, 2006 Jerome Anthony “Hank” Foley, 88, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital Thursday, May 18, 2006. He was born Dec. 24, 1917, in the Foley Hotel in La Grande, the second of five children to Pat A. and Mercedes (Horan) Foley. The family moved to The Dalles in 1920 when they purchased Hotel Dalles. They lived for many years at 106 E. 4th St. in the house that is now occupied by law firms. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1936 and from Willamette School of Law. He was a member of “The Greatest Generation,” serving as a lieutenant and supply officer on the aircraft carrier USS Bogue during World War II. The Bogue was Flagship of six anti-submarine task groups receiving a Presidential Unit Citation “For extraordinary heroism in action against enemy submarines in the Atlantic Area from April 20, 1943, to Aug. 24, 1944.” Following his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he managed Hotel Dalles for many years. He married Irena Crane in 1957 and they were the parents of one son, Michael Henry Foley. They were later divorced. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting, golfing, and skiing. He told stories about his hunting trips, including being stalked by a wounded cougar near Brooks Meadows. Other favorite stories recounted escapades with his brother Pat in the 1920’s, including leading the family’s pet bear Susie in local parades. He maintained an avid interest in The Dalles history and loved to reminisce about those good old days. Another hobby of Jerome’s was bird- watching with his bird book and binoculars always close by. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Tonya Foley and two grandsons, Joey and Jeffrey, Roseville, Calif.; his former wife, Irena Foley, Hillsboro; his sister, Mercedes Kelly, Portland; his brother, Tom and his wife Marjory Foley, The Dalles; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his son Mike in 2002, his parents, his brother Pat Foley and his sister Marie Litfin. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church in The Dalles, Friday, May 26, at 11 a.m. with Father Todd Unger as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery.
