He was born Nov. 21, 1920, in Lyons to Walter Ward Forrest and Emma Long Sandberg Forrest. He was raised in the Fox Valley area and attended school in Mill City. He married Florence Lucas in Vancouver on Sept. 5, 1940 and they raised five children. As a teenager he worked at various car lots in Salem, fostering his love of cars and mechanics. He drove log trucks before entering the Army in World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service medal, Good Conduct medal and a Victory medal for his service in Japan. He built and delivered saw mill equipment throughout the U.S. and Central America and became vice president of Salem Equipment. He later worked for Gerlinger Power in West Salem. He was an avid reader of anything nonfiction. He became a master mechanic and perfected the art of finding and restoring antique cars, especially model T’s. He was the cofounder of the original Salem Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club of America and the Willamette Valley Model T Ford Club and was also an honorary life member of the Mid-Columbia Car Club. He lived in The Dalles for nearly six years, living in his uncle’s home before returning to Salem earlier this year. He loved animals, aircraft and motorcycles. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Florence; children, sANDRA (Michael) Fritz, The Dalles; Stanley Ward, Lyons; Sheryl, Jefferson; Susan, Albany; and Scott, Keizer; sisters, Wardine Jepsen, Stayton; Marie Christensen and Anita Limbeck, Keizer; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Raymond, and two infant sons. Services were held on Dec. 20 at Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton and interment was at Fox Valley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Willamette Valley Hospice in Salem.
