The Dalles Chronicle, January 4, 2006
     Eugene J. Fortin Jr., 85, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local 
hospital on Tuesday, January 3, 2006.
     He was born on February 13, 1920, in Duluth, MN, the oldest of five 
children to Eugene Joseph and Margaret Ruth (Manilla) Fortin. He was raised 
and graduated from high school in Duluth, MN.
     After high school Eugene joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941. After his 
service time he returned to Minnesota where he attended one year of college 
for accounting. He met Betty Lou Catlin in Duluth and on February 10, 1945 
they were married. In 1959 they moved to San Diego where he was an accountant 
for an aerospace/aircraft company. In 1975, they moved to The Dalles and began 
farming cherries, which he did for 15 years. 
     Eugene was a member of the Catholic Church and enjoyed golfing, 
gardening, especially roses and vegetables, collecting stamps, family 
activities, including trips with his children and grandchildren. 
     He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Fortin of The Dalles, his 
children, Karen and her husband John Carter, Mark and his wife Kay all of The 
Dalles, Eugene and his wife Tina Fortin and Susan and her husband Francisco 
Barboza all of San Diego, CA; his grandchildren, John (JD), Michael Eugene, 
Katherine, Carol, Jennifer, Danielle, Brandie, Theresa and Pilar; his great 
grandchildren, Charlie, Christine, Sarah, Ali, Sofia, Juan Jr., Sonny and 
Olivia; his brother, Kenneth Fortin of Chicago, IL and numerous nieces and 
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters.
     A gathering of friends and family will be held at Spencer Libby & Powell 
Funeral Home on Thursday, January 5, 2006 at 3:00 pm. Private cremation was 
held at Win-Quatt Crematory in The Dalles. 
     Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 1311 NW 21st Ave., 
Portland, OR 97209.
