He was born in Corvallis on Sept. 6, 1916 to Thomas and Irene (McCoy) Fraser. He grew up on a wheat ranch in Moro and later graduated from Oregon State College in 1938. He then went to work as a high school teacher in Halfway, where he met and married Aleta Bowerman on Dec. 22, 1938. He served as a Captain in the U.S.Army during World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a battery commander of the 24th Infantry Division and directed naval gunfire in close support of our infantry. He also served for more than three years in the Southwest Pacific and was awarded a Bronze Arrowhead for his participation in the assault landing at Tanarmara Bay. He worked for the State of Washington Department of Agriculture for two years following the end of WW II. He then returned to wheat ranching in Moro where he received a county award for his land conservation programs. He retired in 1977 and moved to Bend. He was an avid skier and golfer. He was a member of the Bend Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church in Bend. He was also active in local writer’s groups and published a novel at the age of 77. He received the Editor’s Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry. Survivors include his wife, Aleta Fraser, Bend; daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie and Robert Woodward, San Francisco Bay area; daughter and son-in-law, Ronda and Ross Baker, Ashland; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Aspen Ridge, 1010 N.E. Purcell Blvd. in Bend at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5. Inurnment will be at Rose Cemetery in Moro.
