Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 17, 2006, 1:01 am The Dalles Chronicle, January 5, 2006 John K. Glover, 81, died Jan. 2, 2006, in The Dalles with family at his side. He was born Jan. 29, 1924 in Odell, Texas, the second of six children to John and Maud (Dunigan) Glover. He grew up in Littlefield, Texas, during the Great Depression. He responded to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, by volunteering for the U.S. Navy. He left by train for Great Lakes Naval Training Center with his best friend Valgene Everland the day after graduating from Littlefield High School in 1942. His earliest years in the Navy were spent at Pearl Harbor and he remembered seeing the salvaging of naval vessels from the December attack. While stationed in Inyokern, Calif., he attended the LaGranada Dance Hall in Bakersfield where he met Marjorie E. Peck. They married May 24, 1946 and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this spring. His military service took the family to Guam and across the country many times before he retired in 1961 as Master Chief Petty Officer. Following his retirement, the family moved to Salem. He worked as a sanitarian (restaurant inspection and water quality) for Marion County Health Department until 1966, head sanitarian for Malheur County until 1970, and head sanitarian for Deschutes Country Health Department until he retired in 1982. The couple continued to live in Bend until moving to The Dalles in 2004. His interests were hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a past member of Elks Club, Odd Fellows, and Good Sams Club. He is survived by his wife Marjorie; children: Michael Dale Glover, Dufur; Rebecca E. and husband A. Jim Woodbridge, Arlington, Va.; Kenneth Wayne Glover, Portland; and Janet Glover, Seattle; grandchildren: Molly Woodbridge, Denver, Colo.; Michael James Woodbridge, Arlington, Va.; John and wife Krissy Glover, Beaverton; and David and wife Aszielina Glover, also of Beaverton; sisters Roberta and husband Jay Davidson, Eagle Lake, Texas; and Doris Eddington of Sugarland, Texas; and brothers: Kieth and wife Marilyn Glover, Marlin, Texas; Ronnie and wife Frieda Glover, Houston, Texas; and Jimmy and wife Cindy Glover, also of Houston. Services will be at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home, Saturday, Jan. 7, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road. Remembrances may be given in lieu of flowers to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles or First United Methodist Church, 305 East 11th Street, The Dalles.
