Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 26, 2006, 11:47 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, June 7, 1984 Loren Haechrel died Tuesday at a hospital in his hometown of Springfield, Minn. Loren's brother, Bob Haechrel, of The Dalles, had donated bone marrow in a transplant operation. Bob said his brother, 24, had declined seriously in the last few days of his life and had known for some time that his leukemia was terminal. The cancer had spread throughout his system, Bob said. The bone transplant took place on June 25, 1982 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. A series of stories carried in The Chronicle at that time depicted the transplant process, which doctors felt at the time was the only way to stop the further spread of the leukemia. Funeral services will be held in Springfield on Saturday and Bob Haechrel was leaving today to fly back to Minnesota to attend the service. He said that much local interest and concern had been expressed at the time the surgery was going on. Those who wish could make memorials to the American Cancer Society in his brother's name, he said.
