Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 19, 2006, 11:16 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, November 10, 1983 Mrs. Alta Caroline Halsey, 73, a resident of The Dalles for a year and a resident of the Oregon coast and Portland area for most of her life, died Nov. 6 at her home after a long illness. She was born Aug. 31, 1910 at Cottage Grove, but shortly afterward moved with her family to Newport, where her father was assigned to the U.S. Lifesaving Service, which later became the U.S. Coast Guard. She married Eldred J. Halsey Aug. 8, 1934. He was a member of the Coast Guard until 1940. Mrs. Halsey was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and had been a nurse's aide at the Adventist Hospital in Portland. Survivors, other than her husband in The Dalles, are three sons, Anton (Tony), The Dalles; Dale, Mustang, Okla., and John, Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Patricia Maxwell, Lincoln, Neb., and Alice Crookes, Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada; 12 grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Prayer services were yesterday at Smith Callaway Chapel and funeral services were today at Bateman Funeral Chapel in Newport. Private burial followed at Eureka Cemetery in Newport.
