Wakley iwakley@msn.com and August 2, 2006, 12:25 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, September 27, 1984 Mildred Virginia Hendricks, 79, died Sept. 20 at Mid-Columbia Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of The Dalles. She was born May 8, 1905 in The Dalles to Elijah and Helen Haight and grew up on Fifteenmile Creek. She attended Monmouth Normal School and returned to the Fairbanks area near The Dalles and taught school there in 1924 and 1925. On Nov. 3, 1926 she married Lester John Hendricks and they lived on a farm seven miles south of Dufur on Tygh Ridge. In 1960 they moved to The Dalles. He died in September of 1979. Mrs. Hendricks was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the St. Anne Circle of the Altar Society, Dufur Valley Garden Club, the Old Wasco County Pioneer Association, the Wasco County CowBelles and the Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include two sons, retired Maj. Gen. Gerald Hendricks, Alexandria, Va., and Dr. T. Hollis Hendricks, The Dalles; two daughters, Mareta Maier, The Dalles, and Jane Ericson, Fair Oaks, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a sister, Faye Mortan, Show Low, Ariz. Another daughter, Arline Kniestedt, died in 1961. Recitation of the rosary was at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home Monday. Mass of Christian burial was Tuesday at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Martin J. Quigley as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary School Scholarship Fund.
