Wakley iwakley@msn.com and August 20, 2006, 1:30 am The Dalles Chronicle, June 4, 2006 Kenneth LeRoy Hill, a former resident of The Dalles, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at Wisconsin Dells Health & Rehab Center. He was born to Albert and Edith (Large) Hill on June 26, 1921 in Wamic. He attended school in The Dalles. In September 1940, he joined the Oregon National Guard and served in the Pacific during World War II. He also served in the Korean War and received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered there. He had tours in Japan, Korea, twice in Hawaii, and in Germany. While stationed stateside, he served two tours at Fort Lewis, Wash., one at Fort Hood, Texas and Fort McCoy, Wis., and two at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He met his wife, Donna Francois, while stationed at Fort McCoy. They were married on Sept. 23, 1952. He retired as a Master Sergeant, after serving his country in the US Army for more than 20 years, on October 1, 1962. Ken drove school bus for the Reedsburg School District, and had worked for Baraboo Concrete for 20 years. After his retirement from Baraboo Concrete, he was a crossing guard in West Baraboo for several years and had also delivered the State Journal for 14½ years. He had been a member of the Baraboo Nazarene Church since 1970 and attended faithfully. He was the Sunday school Superintendent for many years, taught Sunday school, and served on the church board. He also volunteered at the food pantry for seven years. He and his wife enjoyed their membership in the Yellow Thunder Sam’s Camping Club for many years. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna Hill, West Baraboo; one daughter, Thelma (David) Zastrow, North Freedom; three sons, Theron (Carol) Hill, North Freedom; Melvin (Myrna) Hill, Cabot, Ark.; and Verlyn (Kathy) Hill, Baraboo; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith (Mildred) Hill, Washington state; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Nyle (Dorothy) Hill, Alaska; many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Albert Hill; his sisters, Edith (Lyle) Johnson and Eileen (Harold) Durfee; and two brothers, Nyle and Vernon Hill. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, at the Walnut Hill Bible Church in Baraboo with Pastor Bruce Cadle officiating. Burial will be at the Walnut Hill Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by Baraboo VFW Post #987.
