He was born Nov. 9, 1923 in Hood River. His parents Joseph and Ethel Mae (McLeod) Horn lived in the community of Oak Grove and were involved in the operation of the family sawmill, Horn Brothers Lumber Company. He attended school at Oak Grove and Hood River High School, graduating in 1941. He graduated from Oregon State College (Oregon State University) with a degree in forest engineering. He was a captain in the Marines, and served during World War II and the Korean War. On Oct. 30, 1948, he married Ellen Fleck of The Dalles. His long career included the operation of West Side Grocery Store with his brother, Allen Horn. He also worked several years for the U.S. Forest Service in Parkdale. During the last 30 years of his career he worked as a logging manager at Hanel Lumber Company near Parkdale. He was very active in the community. He joined the West Side Volunteer Fire Department in 1949 and was the second fire chief of the department. He was a member of the American Legion beginning in 1946, and was both local and district commander. He was an original member of the Hood River County Bank board of directors; one of the founding members of the Wy’east Whirlers; and was a member of the school board during the early 1970’s. He was also active with his sons in the local Boy Scout organization. Survivors include his daughter Susan Chamberlain and her husband Nicholas, Hood River; sons Joe Horn and his wife Janet, Ashland; and Rob Horn, Sutherlin; two grandchildren, Katie and Anna Horn, Ashland; two step- grandchildren, Alix and Ryan Chamberlain, Salem; and sister Joann Moody, Apache Junction, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Horn, parents Joe and Mae Horn, and brother Allen Horn. Services will be held at Anderson’s Tribute Center on Monday, June 6, at 2 p.m. A reception with refreshments will follow. Private interment with military honors was held at Idlewild Cemetery.
