Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 27, 2006, 1:29 am The Dalles Chronicle, January 25, 1996 Joseph "Jody" Alan Hotka, 45, a resident of Beaverton, died in Portland following an auto accident on Jan. 23, 1996. He was born Aug. 22, 1950 in The Dalles, the fourth of five children to Ray and Alice (Lang) Hotka. He attended Joseph G. Wilson Grade School and graduated in 1968 from The Dalles High School. While in high school, he earned the Boy Scout Life Scout rank, was also a student Lion, member of National Honor Society, president of the Associated Student Body, and Boy of the Year. He won local and state VFW oratorical contents, and then represented Oregon in the national VFW speaking contest in Washington D. C. After graduating cum laude from Lewis and Clark College, he worked as a research assistant and speech writer in Washington, D. C. for Sen. Bob Packwood. Later he worked as a program director for radio stations in The Dalles, Twin Falls, Idaho, Spokane and Portland. Briefly he was an announcer for the Portland Winterhawks. At the time of his death he was a floor manager for Norm Thompson. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed travel and had made numerous trips to Europe and the Middle East. He had also traveled in Mexico and was anticipating a trip to India. Survivors include his father Ray, of The Dalles; brothers Tom of Overland Park, KS; and Steve of Forks, WA; sisters, Kathy Deal of Shreveport, LA and Jean Bean of Black Canyon City, AZ; special friends Mike, Ann, Elliott and Lissie Parr of Portland and Ruzena Pazitkova of Bratislava, Slovakia. He was preceded in death by his mother Alice, in June, 1995. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at St. Peter Catholic Church in The Dalles with Rev. Ronald Maag as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, sent in care of Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles, OR. 97058.
