May 2003 ********************************************************************************* Surnames: Ike, Dick, Redthunder, Thompson, Wahchumwah Frederick Ike Sr., 67, a resident of Brownsville (Oregon), died on Tuesday, May 13, at his home. He was born January 11, 1936 in Rock Creek in Klickitat County (Washington). He was appointed chief of the Mid-Columbia Indians in 1983. He served on the Yakima Nations Tribal Council and worked as a fisherman, mill worker and archaeological consultant for the Yakima Nation. He was a member of the Northwest affiliated tribes and the National Council of American Indians. He was a spiritual leader that strongly advocated treaty rights, protecting tribal fishing and hunting rights and protecting the sacred foods, the salmon, elk and deer, roots and berries and preserving tribal language and spiritual practices. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Ike; sons Frederick Ike Jr., Lucas Ike, Tyrone Ike and Tom Ike; daughters Leona Ike, Lavena Ike, Lena Ike and companion Yvonne Colfax, 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his mother, Elsie Dick; four sisters, Jouce Redthunder, Evelyn Ike, Tess Thompson, and Trina Dick and one brother, Tim Thompson. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Ike; one son, Ivan Ike; one daughter, Dena Ike; one brother, Nelson Ike, and one sister, Mathilda Wahchumwah. Services were held Wednesday at Rock Creek Longhouse and burial Thursday morning at Black Wolf Cemetery in Klickitat County.
