The Dalles Chronicle, December 28, 2003
     Gwendoline Jewell, 88, a former resident of Appleton, died at a care 
center in The Dalles on Dec. 22, 2003.
     She was born July 4, 1915 in Suffolk County, England, to Edward and 
Minnie (Scott) Leach.
     After her school years she worked at Brentwood Golf Club until World War 
II when she served the war effort as a nurse aide at an orphanage in London.
     In 1950 she came to the U.S. to visit her sister Betty in Appleton and 
while there she met Lester Jewell. In 1952 she returned to the U.S. and 
married him and lived in Appleton, where they raised their family.
     After his death in 1987, she moved to The Dalles. While living in The 
Dalles she attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. While in Appleton she was 
active in the Appleton Women’s Club and later in the consolidated Lyle-
Appleton Women’s Club.
     She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; brothers, Jack, Reggie, 
and Cliff and a sister, Mabel.
     Survivors are her son, Gary Jewell, Appleton; daughter, Carol Jewell, 
Anchorage, Alaska; son, Cliff Jewell, White Salmon; sister, Betty Tuthill, 
Lyle; brothers, Les, Ken and Roy in England; grandsons, Justin Maupin, 
Hillsboro; and Jeff Jewell, Spokane; and granddaughter, Cindy Jewell, Lynwood, 
Wash., and great-grandsons, Skyler and Mason Maupin, Hillsboro.
     Services were held Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at Gardner Chapel in White Salmon. 
Vault interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Appleton.
     Memorials may be made to the Lyle Lions Club in care of Gardner Funeral 
Home, P.O. Box 390, White Salmon, WA. 98672, which was in care of arrangements.
