He was born April 10, 1928 in Rapid City, SD to Theodore Roosevelt and Margaret Ellen (Durham) Kemery and grew up in a log cabin in Cedar Island, SD. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served with Battery “C” of the 770th AAA Gun Battalion while stationed at Fort Lewis. Following his military service he returned to South Dakota and worked on the Fort Randall Dam construction project at Pickstown. He later worked as an auto mechanic for several dealerships before opening his own service station in Gregory, SD. He came to Oregon in 1969 and worked at the Swan Island Naval Shipyard in Portland for several years. He married Bonnie Jane Randall in August of 1988 on the beach near Warrenton at the historic Peter Iredale shipwreck, and the couple came to The Dalles in 2002. He enjoyed traveling, people-watching, and lingering with friends and relatives over numerous cups of coffee. He was a member of the Montevilla Baptist Church in Portland, the International Longshoremen’s Union, and had been a member of the Oddfellows Lodge (I.O.O.F.) in South Dakota. He is survived by his wife Bonnie of The Dalles; his mother Margaret Ellen Kemery in Wagner, SD; his children and step-children, son David Lee Kemery of Portland, step-son Richard Randall of The Dalles, daughter Beverly Ann Nelson of Portland, step-daughters Sonya Stufflebeam of Gresham and Angela Burchell of Fairview, and foster daughter Gail Moffitt of Gladstone. Also surviving are his brothers, Charles of Wagner, SD, Stanley of Lititz, Penn., Russell of Tucson, Ariz. and Theodore of Pierre, SD and three step-grandchildren; Ashley Fagerson of Portland and Cassie and Marvin Burchellof Fairview. Graveside services will be Friday, Feb. 20 at 12:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Stroke Center, CR-131, Oregon Health Sciences University, 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Ore., 97201-3098.
