She was born Jan. 27, 1910 in Cliff, N.M., the only child of Joseph J. and Estelle (Hunter) Bell. She was raised primarily in the Southwest and graduated valedictorian from Rifle High School in Rifle, Colo. in 1929. After high school, she attended nursing school in Coeur D' Alene, Idaho. She married Clifford "Cotton" Light on Jan. 1, 1934 in Waitsburg, Wash., at her mother-in-law's home. They lived in Waitsburg and Walla Walla, where she worked with her husband on a tugboat called the Mary Gale. They moved to The Dalles in 1939 and she began to work at Mid-Columbia Hospital in the early 1940s. She served as President of the Oregon Licensed Practical Nurse Association. She worked for Dr. Mitchell's chiropractic business until her retirement in 1966. She was a member and an elder of Gateway Presbyterian Church and enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling. She is survived by her daughter, Janet and husband, Manny Ortega, Bonsall, Calif.; her son Jim and his wife, Dorothy Light, Glendale, Ariz.; granddaughters, Karen Ortega-Kane and her husband, Kevin, Placentia, Calif., Katherine Ortega and her husband, Glenn Paculba, San Diego, Calif.; grandsons, Doug Light, Glendale, Ariz. and Jason and his wife, Kelly Light, Gresham; great-grandchildren, Keaton Kane, Karson Kane, Mallory Light and Gunnar Light. She was preceded in death by her husband. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005. Memorial services will be held at Gateway Presbyterian Church at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2005 with Pastor James Hazlett officiating. Private inurnment will be held at Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery. Cremation will be held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to The Dalles Wahtonka Union High School Nursing Scholarship Fund in memory of Josephine Light, 220 E. 10th St., ATTN: Ayme Allison, The Dalles, OR 97058.
