Surnames: Newton, Rogers, Hansen, Roberts, Hollenbach Jackson (Jack) Jay Newton, 78, a resident of The Dalles for the last 49 years, died at the Oregon Veterans Home on April 19, 2003, of Alzheimer's. He was born October 24, 1924, in Coquille (Oregon), the younger of two children of Orville and Viola Newton. He graduated from high school in Coquille and then attended Linfield College. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. He was stationed in Okinawa at the end of the war. He returned to Linfield for a year and went into business. Later he returned to school at Eastern Oregon College earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He taught and was acting principal at Court Street School and then was principal at Joseph G. Wilson and Colonel Wright. He retired in 1983 after 26 years in the District 12 school system. He was a charter member and first president of the Wyam Kiwanis. He was a long-time member of The Dalles Country Club as he was an avid golfer. He had been a member of the Oregon Seniors and the Columbia Blues, both golf organizations. He was involved with Scouting for most of his life. He served the local council in various capacities. He was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1980-a proud moment in his life. He was a member of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Museum, Fort Dalles Museum, and the Wasco County Historical Society. He and his wife were long-time supporters of The Dalles Art Association. Survivors include his wife, Mollie; sons, David and Matthew; daughters, Marcia Rogers and Julie Hansen; grandsons, Galen and Alex Newton; sister, Dorothy Roberts; nephew, Tim Roberts; niece, Amanda Hollenbach. A memorial services is planned for May 3. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to the Boy Scouts, 111 East 5th Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058 or to a charity of one choice-especially an organization for young people.
