He was born May 25, 1916 in The Dalles, the youngest of three children to John R. and Flora Ellen (Brown) Ryan. He was raised in The Dalles and graduated from The Dalles High School. After high school, he played semi-pro baseball and then entered the U.S. Army. In the military, he served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Rising through the ranks, he was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant. He married Florence May Whitecotton on May 28, 1947 in Goldendale, and he worked for Model Laundry in The Dalles and was a postal carrier. He also worked for the Oregon State Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator before his retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Gleaners, Meals on Wheels, VFW Post # 2471, having served as past commander and as a past President of the Oregon State Employees Association. He loved his family, enjoyed working on projects, the outdoors, vegetable gardening, hunting, fishing and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish. He is survived by three children, Stephen and his wife, Sue Ryan, Lincoln City; Linda Thomas, Pendleton; and Evelyn Hedge, The Dalles; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Ryan in July 2003; his brother, Harold “Sam” Ryan; and his sister, Golda Thompson. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Monday, from 2 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, 8:30 to 10 a.m. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. Interment with military rites will follow at The Dalles Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery formerly Parklawn Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, PO Box 390, The Dalles, OR 97058.
