Ednalois Maxon Saunders, 97, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care center on Tuesday, April 8, 2003. She was born on March 14, 1906, to parents, Richard D. and Ella Mae (Barnett) Maxon. R.D. Maxon was a well-known architect and builder in the Columbia Basin in the early 1900's and Mae was the child of early Oregon pioneers. She grew up in The Dalles and was valedictorian of the class of 1923 and graduated from Reed College in 1927. She taught school in Spokane (Washington) and The Dalles until her marriage to Carroll W. Saunders, pharmacist, on January 19, 1935. The couple owned a pharmacy in Fossil (Oregon), and then were stationed in Sacramento (California) from 1941 to 1945 during WWII. After returning to The Dalles in 1945, they owned the Hospital Pharmacy. At this time she returned to teaching. She was a math teacher for The Dalles Junior High. She was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregation, AAUW, and PEO, Chapter BF. She was an avid bridge player, reader and she loved to travel to Mexico and was always ready for a new adventure. She was survived by a son, Charles M. Saunders, his wife, Barbara, and granddaughter, Megan, from Napa, California and a daughter, Susan Dalrymple, her husband Larry, and grandsons, Brian, Jeff and Kevin, and one great grandson, all from Portland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll, and children, William and Caroline. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory and private family burial services will be held later. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral is in care of arrangements.
