She was born Aug. 24, 1913 in Dallas, Ore., the eldest of three daughters of Nettie and Earl Barham. She grew up in the Salem area and married her childhood friend Josh Sawyer on Aug. 12, 1937. The couple lived in Lakeview, where she was a legal secretary. They moved to The Dalles in 1950, where she was the office manager for Stadelman Fruit Company for many years. The couple loved the outdoors and spent quality time fishing, hunting and traveling. She was a member of the Soroptimist Club of The Dalles, she also volunteered for many years at Mid-Columbia Medical Center and was on the board of directors of Maryhill Museum. She was an avid collector of Irish Belleek China and belonged to the Columbia Chapter of the Belleek Collectors’ International Society. At the time of her death she had amassed one of the larger collections in the Pacific Northwest. She was preceded in death by her husband, Josh, in 1993, and by her parents and younger sister, Jean Smither. She is survived by her youngest sister, Vivian Moore, Horseshoe Bay, Texas; two sons, Skip Sawyer, Bellevue, Wash.; and Gary Sawyer, Vancouver, Wash.; and their spouses Sandy Sawyer and Daryl Lindley; three grandchildren Scott Sawyer, Olympia, Wash.; Susie Schieche, Puyallup, Wash.; and Steve Sawyer, Marysville, Wash.; five great grandchilden Jeremy and Dylan Sawyer, Alexa and Erica Schieche and Shelby Sawyer. At her request, no formal service is planned. There will be an informal gathering of family and friends on Sunday, June 13, at her son’s home in Vancouver, 2401 NE 57th St., from 1 to 6 p.m. Her ashes will be spread in Lake County at one of her favorite hunting spots to be with those of her late husband.
