He was born to Fred and Antonia Settje in Creston, Neb., on Oct. 8, 1926. His early childhood was spent in Corona, S.D., where he graduated from high school in 1944. He served his country in the U.S. Army’s European Theater during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947. He married Ingrid Elizabeth Larson in Wilmot, S.D., on June 17, 1954. They had 11 children and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. His work in heavy construction took him and his family across the United States, where nine of his 11 children were born in different states. In 1963, they moved to Hood River which became their home. His home was always a gathering place for many. Among the people who became a part of his extended family are Mike Curry and Brad Berens. He enjoyed with his family hunting, camping and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Ingrid Settje, and their children: Victor Settje and wife Nancy; Connie Fisher; Daniel Settje; Wayne Settje and wife Gala; Josie Davenport and husband Larry; Kathy Kahler and husband Richard; Donna Settje; Elizabeth Settje; James Settje and wife Trish; Joseph Settje and wife Bobbi; and Hannah Settje; 27 grandchildren, three great-grand children, and his dog Fred. The Christian burial will take place Friday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, 11th and Pine, Hood River.
