Wakley iwakley@msn.com March 7, 2007, 12:45 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, May 3, 1984 Charles (Jack) Slavens, 84, died at a nursing home in Kirkland, Wash., April 25. He resided in Bellevue, Wash. Slavens was born Jan. 7, 1900. He was a highway engineer and worked locally on the McNary and The Dalles dams and the Wapinitia highway cutoff. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle, in 1977. He is survived by nieces: Barbara Shearer, the Dalles and Paulien Driver and Roene Georghegan of Bellevue; nephews Lester Gardner of Boring, Cole Gardner of Portland, Charles Driver, Keith Driver and LaVon Smith of Bellevue and Ralph Driver, Graham, Wash.; sister Gertrude Crabtree Driver, Seattle; grandson Nicholas Smith, Boise; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 30, at Smith Callaway Chapel, with private burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery. The Rev. Ralph Driver officiated.
