Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 17, 2006, 11:05 pm The Dalles Chronicle, January 27, 2006 George Delbert Smith, 91, a resident of Moro, died at a local care facility on Monday, Jan. 23, 2006. He was born on May 4, 1914 in Caldwell, Idaho, the younger of two children to George V. and Georgetta (Judd) Smith. They lived in Hereford, where he graduated from high school in 1932. After graduating from high school he attended Oregon State University and worked for the Oregon Forest Service as a fire lookout. In 1940 he graduated from OSU with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture with a major in range management and minor in agriculture education. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and became a glider pilot and Officer. After the service, he returned to Condon and worked for the International Company selling farm equipment. In 1955 he married Lois C. Keesee in Seattle, Wash. They moved to Kenai, Alaska, where he worked selling logging equipment. Later he came back to work for the Cushman Equipment Company in Moro and then he moved to the Eugene and Springfield area working for Timber Tractor. He then moved to Pendleton, working for the Pendleton Grain Growers and then back to the Heppner and Condon area, eventually becoming the county planner for Morrow County. In the early 1970’s he had two tours in Ankara, Turkey as a consultant for the OSU/Rockefeller Dryland Wheat Production Team, where he taught the Turkish people how to grow wheat. Following his return he then went to work for Empire Farms in Boardman, then getting a position with the Oregon State University Experimental Station in Moro until his retirement in 1984. He married Marie F. (McCown) Cyphers-Smith in September 1991 in Longview, Wash. He loved hunting deer, elk and antelope, flying, horseback riding, was a life member of the Elks for 62 years, and enjoyed traveling. He is survived by his wife, Marie Cypers-Smith; his son, Richard A. Meade, Portland; his daughter, Deborah Smith, The Dalles; his grandson, Michael Meade, Portland; his niece, Sharon Cox Springer, Fremont, Calif.; and many extended children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois and his brother, Norman Cox. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements.
