She was born Aug. 31, 1920 in Soda Springs, Idaho, to William Frank and Ruby (Allen) Cushing. The family returned to Wasco County and Elaine grew up on Tygh Ridge. She attended school at Long Hollow and graduated valedictorian of her class of four from Dufur High School. She went on to attend college and earned her teaching degree from Marylhurst College. Later, after all her children were in school, she returned to college and earned her masters degree in special education from Sonoma State College and taught special education until she retired. She married Angus D. Somerville in 1943, during World War II in Albany. They had seven children and lived in Springfield for a time before moving to Napa, Calif. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and was a devoted Catholic all of her life. She loved to laugh and tell old jokes. She enjoyed good food and large family gatherings. She is survived by her children, Jerry Somerville and his wife, Michico, Napa, Calif.; Thomas Somerville, The Dalles; William Somerville, Napa; Janet Somerville, Hood River; Kathleen and her husband, Fred Pothoff, Angwin, Calif.; Richard Somerville, Crescent City, Calif.; Susan and her husband, Paul Hartwell, Stayton; her grandchildren, Mark Somerville, Paul Somerville, Beth Eyler, Anna Kim, Dustin Whelan, Angela Whelan, Mari Somerville, Shoichi Somerville and Michael Hartwell; her brother, Lawrence Cushing and sisters, Esther Dethmen and Cecilia Cushing. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glen Cushing, Frankie Cushing and her sister, Lillian Cushing. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. Recitation of the rosary will follow at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Friday, May 27, with interment following at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Meal Inc., 315 W. 3rd Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
