He was born Oct. 1, 1921 in Irrigon, to Frank Edward and Esther Graybeal (Thurner) Strader. He was raised in Irrigon and Cascade Locks. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression and worked on construction of the Bridge of the Gods. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served as flight engineer to the Black Cat squadron, flying PBYs During World War II. He was married to Celeste Delight Coe in Vancouver, Wash. on Jan. 10, 1945. He retired from the Navy in 1960 and joined the City of Oak Harbor as a police officer. He began as a patrolman and retired in 1979 as captain. He attended the Whidbey Presbyterian Church of Oak Harbor. He was a member of the Chief Petty Officers Association, the PBY Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Whitehead-Muzzall Post 7392, Navy League of the United States. He loved hunting and fishing and fished commercially for several years. He is survived by four children and their spouses: Daryla and Charles Extine of Renton, Wash.; Pamela Kennedy of Oak Harbor; Mark and Donna Strader of Lynnwood and Jana Palmer of Oak Harbor; brother Rick Strader of Madras, and sister Gayanne Thompson of Culver; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Celeste and two brothers, Dennis and David Strader. Memorials may be made to the PBY Association, P.O. Box 941, Oak Harbor, Washington 98277-0941. Arrangements were under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
