Stultz Sr., 68, a former resident of The Dalles, died at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, Wash., on Dec. 9, 2003. He was born March 11, 1935, in Spokane, to Archie Roscoe and Pollyanna (Longfield) Stultz. He attended elementary school in Portland and McMinnville, then graduated from high school in The Dalles. He married Maureen E. Sullivan on April 18, 1992 in Nome, Alaska. One of his greatest memories was a Boy Scout Jamboree that took him across Canada and the United States to Valley Forge, Pa., where he met and shook hands with then President Harry S. Truman. From the age of 16 he worked as a deck hand on tugs running the Columbia River. Ten days after graduation from high school he made skipper. After the dams had been put in he felt there was no longer a challenge to running the Columbia and moved to Stockton, Calif., hauling dirt for that portion of Interstate 5. He attended a maritime college where he studied in order to earn his master mariner’s license. From a home base of Tacoma he sailed to Alaska. He also worked on the East Coast as supercargo for barges loading and unloading for ports domestic and overseas. On July 4, 1976 near Takotna, Alaska, he was in a terrible accident that changed his life. Despite the prognosis of never walking again he disagreed with the doctors and walked anyway though it took more than two years of effort. On retirement, he and his wife, built a home in Port Angeles. He is survived by his wife, Maureen E. Sullivan, Port Angeles; his daughters, Kelly Stultz, Tacoma, Wash.; Kim Hansen and her husband Joe, Medford; stepdaughter, Rita Wilbanks and her husband Brian, Los Angeles; his son, Donald ‘DJ’ Stultz Jr., Bremerton, Wash.; his stepson Jon Krier, Seattle; his sister, Frances Well, Port Angeles; her children and their spouses and children from the Port Angeles area; grandchildren Theresa Suprunowski, Highwood, Ill.; William Suprunowski Jr., Tacoma; Tamra Dawn Stultz, Tacoma; great-gandson: Lucas Suprunowski, Medford. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Archie Jr. and Richard who died as young children. A celebration of his life will be held on Jan. 18 in Port Angeles. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Port Angeles Lions Club, P.O. Box 466, PA WA 98362 or charity of choice.
