The Dalles Chronicle, April 22, 2005
     Pearl Louise Sutherland, 87, a resident of The Dalles, died Tuesday, 
April 19, 2005 at her home.
     She was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Monticello, Utah, to Harry Hyrum and 
Harriet Parthenia (Hyde) Preston and lived in Thompson, Utah, until age 10 
when her family moved to Hood River. 
     After attending Hood River High School she married George M. Sutherland 
in Stevenson, in January 1935. They made their home in Hood River until moving 
to Wamic in 1947. They were instrumental in establishing the Wamic lumber mill 
and lumber yard which later became Copper’s. Mr. Sutherland died in 1993.
     She moved to The Dalles from Wamic in 1992, and to her last home at 
Flagstone Retirement Community in 2002.
     She enjoyed making ceramic projects, reading, and especially doing 
crossword puzzles, which she did into the last weeks of her life. She had been 
a member of the Ty-wama Saddle Club, and while a resident of Wamic, a member 
of the Birthday Club.
     Survivors include her daughters and their families Julia Ann and Hank 
Shafer, Vancouver, Wash.; Judy and Julius Reynolds, Bend; and Patricia and Dan 
Kenslow, The Dalles; a son-in-law Jerry Bowdle; eight grandchildren Tammy 
Rosbach, Julie Bodsky, Kathie Donahue, Mike Bowdle, Jill Taylor, Mark 
Reynolds, Eric Kenslow and Jay Kenslow and ten great-grandchildren, as well as 
numerous nieces and nephews.
     In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be spread in a private 
ceremony at the breaks of the White River to rejoin her husband. 
     Memorial contributions may be made to Flagstone Retirement Community, 
3325 Columbia View Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058. Arrangements are by Columbia 
Cremation & Burial.
    A memorial service for Pearl Louise Sutherland, who died April 19 in The 
Dalles, will be held Saturday, April 30th at 12:30 p.m. at Flagstone Assisted 
Living Center.
