She was born June 4, 1914, in Remsen, Iowa, the older of two children to Otto C. and Amy J. (Johnson) Gruenefeldt. She was raised and graduated from high school in Kingsley in 1932 and then attended the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating in 1936. She married her school-days sweetheart, Emery Christian Thompson on Feb. 27, 1940, in Kingsley, Iowa. He came to Oregon in 1936 and to The Dalles in 1939 where he operated the Pines Dairy on Mill Creek Road. When the dairy closed, they continued to operate the 765-acre farm, raising chickens, beef cattle, growing peaches, apricots, sweet cherries and Zinfandel grapes and producing alfalfa hay. She was a member of First Christian Church and Good Sam Club, the Oregon Trail Chapter. She had been a member of Mill Creek Grange and a 4H Club leader. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, camping, R.V. travel and oil painting. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Linda and her husband, Alfred Schwider, Maple Valley, Wash.; Roger C. Thompson, Sandpoint, Idaho, and his wife, Jeni Thompson, The Dalles; grandchildren, Scott Thompson, The Dalles; and Dustin Thompson, Sandpoint, Idaho; Ward and Susie Schwider, Boise, Idaho; and Amy and Adam Wolf, Monroe, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Becca Schwider, and Morgan and Sam Wolf. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emery, on June 23, 2001. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Friday, June 18, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, June 19, at 1 p.m. with Asa Jenson and Mike Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery, formerly Parklawn Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
