     Mattie Marie (Westby) Walcker, 83, a resident of Lewiston, Idaho, who 
lived most of her life in The Dalles, died from complications of the heart at 
St. Joseph’s Hospital on June 27, 2004.
     She was born July 31, 1920 in Madison Minn., one of eight children to 
George and Rina Copple.
     She married John Harley Westby and they had seven children. They divorced 
and she married Richard Walcker. They traveled frequently and her favorite 
place was Saudi Arabia where they were with the Corps of Engineers.  She 
enjoyed teaching English to local children. She was an avid golfer, an 
accomplished seamstress, very active in her children’s schools and was the 
first woman to manage The Dalles Country Club. She went back to college in her 
later years at Wisconsin to achieve her degree. Due to a stroke, she lived her 
last years at Life Care Center in Lewiston, where she was on committees and 
spoke her mind.
     She is survived by her children, Jonnie Westby of Portland, Mike Westby 
of The Dalles, Sue Cummins of Vancouver, Becky Faller of Lewiston, Greg Westby 
of Cheney, Wash., Julie Vantrease of Clarkston, Wash., Molly Weaver of 
Touchet, Wash., 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
     She was cremated at Merchants Funeral Home in Clarkston. There will be a 
memorial service for her in The Dalles on Sunday, July 11 at Sorosis Park at 
11 a.m.
