Joe Williams Sr., 90, a resident of The Dalles, died at a Klamath Falls (Oregon) hospital on Saturday, May 10, 2003. He was born September 12, 1912, in Charlotte, North Carolina, the oldest of eight children to Jesse and Callie (Penn) Williams. After he was born, the family moved to Mobile, Alabama and kept moving until he was 11. He moved to Alaska in 1958 and lived there until 1973. In 1973, he moved to The Dalles, supposedly to retire. However, he continued building and beautifying the community with his exceptional craftsmanship. He worked as a home builder and as a general contractor and was a member of the Mid Columbia Church of Christ and Masonic Lodge. He is survived by three sons, Leslie James Williams and his wife Delilah, Klamath Falls; Joe Williams Jr. and his wife Linda, Anchorage, Alaska; John Albert Williams, Portland; five daughters, Susie Smith, Anchorage; Bessie Mae Gaines, Los Angeles (California); Pauline Williams Coutee, Seattle (Washington); Fellon L. Brandt and husband Robert, Anchorage; Alpha Hawk and husband Duane, Anchorage; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his b rother, Robert Williams, Sacramento, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Wordie Be Huff; his daughter, Mary C. Kelly; sons, J.D. Williams and Timothy R. Williams; his brother, John Williams; sisters, Leola Hawthorne; Emma Heaven and Lena Orange. Viewing and visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m., Thursday, May 15, and on Friday from 8:30 a.m. through the services. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Friday, with Pastor Dave Astin officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Cemetery.
