J. Clarke Publishing Company Among the residents of Washington county, Oregon, who are devoting their lives to the treatment of human ailments and the alleviation of suffering, stands Dr. Elmer H. Smith, of Hillsboro, who has been more than ordinarily successful and has built up a large and lucrative practice. He is a native of Missouri and is a son of Dr. L. B. and Mary E. (Bronson) Smith, both of whom were natives of Ohio. The mother died in 1918. His father practiced medicine in Illinois and Missouri and in 1897 came to Oregon, locating in Portland, where he was engaged in professional work for a number of years, but is now associated with his son in Hillsboro. Elmer H. Smith secured his early education in the public schools of Missouri and attended high school after moving to Portland. He then entered the American School of Osteopathy, at Kirksville, Missouri, from which he was graduated with the D. 0. degree in 1910. While in that school he also served one year as a medical interne in Kirksville, and after his graduation there he entered the Pacific Medical College, at Los Angeles, California, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1912. Since completing his professional training Dr. Smith has been engaged in the active practice in Hillsboro, where he has gained a well earned reputation for his learning, ability and skill and is numbered among the leading professional men of this county. In the fall of 1927 Dr. Smith opened the E. H. Smith Hospital at 1859 Washington street, Hillsboro, a splendidly located and well equipped institution, containing twenty beds and in which five nurses are employed, and which is prepared to handle all kinds of medical or osteopathic cases. The institution has a physio- therapy department and has proven a boon to the community which it serves. Though Dr. Smith owns the greater part of the stock in the hospital, a number of prominent citizens of Hillsboro are associated with him as stockholders or directors, namely, W. G. Hare, Edmund B. Tongue, A. E. Maling, Guy Powers, Reuben Weils, Harry Hill and others. Dr. Smith is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Pythias and the United Artisans, though the demands of his professional work prevent his taking an active part in fraternal affairs. He belongs to the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and has shown a proper interest in everything relating to the welfare and progress of his community. He is greatly interested in aviation and is the owner of an Air King aeroplane. During the World war he enlisted in the medical corps of the United States Navy but the Armistice was signed before he was called into active service. He is now a major in the medical corps of the Oregon National Guard. He possesses to a notable degree the essential qualifications of the successful physician and holds an enviable place in the confidence and respect of the people of his community.
