Royal to Thomas Huston which deed is recorded in Book Q on page 104 of the Records of Deeds of Yamhill County; thence in a northerly direction 26 rods on the west line of said land to set stake for the northeast corner of the land herein described; thence west on the southline of said Huston's land 14 rods to the southwest corner of a tract of land told by Bartlett and Polly Whitlow to D.G. Rogers by deed which is recorded in Deed Book Q on page 318 Records of Deeds of said County; thence west to the northwest corner of an acre tract of land sold by the said Bartlett and Polly Whitlow to Tabitha Whitcomb by deed recorded on page 65 of book Q, Records of Deeds of said County.....Said property is to be sold for the payment of the claims against said estate. In the Brick Store, corner of 3rd and Jefferson St., Lafayette, Oregon. ---- PACIFIC COAST AREA NEWS An immigrant train consisting of seventeen wagons passed Rockville last week enroute for Lewis County, Washington Territory. They are from Kansas. ---- Several cases of sudden sickness occurred in Hillsboro from a disease that resembles cholera. --- A Russian Finn, 20 years old by the name of F.H. Matson, started to swim a horse from the main land to Deer Island down the Columbia a few days since, and has not been seen since. The horse returned home on the same day without saddle or bridle. ---- During the month, three men have been drowned in the Salmon River at a point known as Old Chimney. One of them bore the peculiar name of Apple Sass John, another was known as Ben Brown, and the third was a stock man, name unknown. ---- News article taken from "The Jacksonville Sentinel" - - - Josephine County again comes to the front with a first class murder, the victim this time being W. Akers, formerly of Sams Valley of this county and the slayer David Gilmore. It appears that last fall Gilmore charged Akers who is a married man, with the seduction of his daughter about sixteen years of age, and warned him to leave the country, which he did. Last week Akers returned, ostensibly for the purpose of taking his wife away. Gilmore presented with a rifle, declaring to kill Akers on sight, and proceeded to hunt him up. Meeting him on the road, he, Gilmore, commenced shooting without effect and Akers ran for the brush and took refuge behind a stump. Gilmore continued firing and the deceased, being armed with a small five-shooter, fired a shot which inflicted a serious wound on Gilmore, an on incautiously looking from his shelter, received a shot from Gilmore's Winchester right between the eyes, causing instant death. ----- LOCAL/COUNTY News DEATH OF MRS. M.A. WOOD The announcement of the death of this lady fell with shocking force upon the ears of this people at about two o'clock p.m. on Sunday last 4th inst. Her death was very sudden. Although not in the best of health she was able to be out to the corner stone ceremonies on Wednesday last week but was stricken with congestive chill immediately after her return home, but was apparently recovering nicely when this prostration up to the time of her death. The fatal hour approached with no forewaring. Sudddenly the sick woman sprang from the bed into her nurses arms in the throes of deathly agony and with the piotious invocation "My god, take me from this pain", and she quickly passed away. Her prayer had been answered in its solemn fullness. Mrs. Wood was a relict of P.P. Wood, whose death occurred one year and one week preceding hers. She was a sister of the Davis family, who with their family ties form a wide relationship and are joined in mourning the departed by a host of friends, whose acquaintance dates back to the pioneer days of our community. Mrs. Wood would have been 49 years of age on the 12th day of August next. She leaves a son and daughter to mourn. Her remains were buried in the South Yamhill Church yard on Monday last. ----- NEWBERG News Mrs. Jesse Hobson is suffering very badly with the rheumatism. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Robison, residing between this place and Dundee, have gone east of the mountains to stay awhile for the benefit of Mrs. Robison's health. ---- Frankie Newman, who got his collar bone broken a few weeks ago, has about recovered from his injury. --- SHERIDAN News Charles Murray of Portland, who has been visiting the S. Potter family for a week, returned home yesterday. --- Will Raleigh is visiting his relatives in Portland. --- Miss Utter, from the East, who was taken down with typhoid fever some time ago, breathed her last near Bellevue, on Monday last. The reamins were buried at the Baptist church on Tuesday. ---- Levi Leland organized a lodge at Willamina last week with 40 charter members. --- Mr. Ab. Stephens and wife left for the Santiam country Tuesday morning where they intend locating permanently. ---- Johnny, the little son of Mr. John Caswell of this place,was painfully wounded on Monday evening in the savage meshes of a rolling harrow into which the little fellow was thrown by some means. The child's left leg was badly bruised and mutilated though he escaped with no broken bones. The accident occurred on the farm of Mr. McKinney near Bellevue. ---- AMITY NEWS Mr. Cochran died, after a lingering illness at the residence of his son-in-law H.B. Tingle, in Amity, Yamhill County, Oregon, passing from the earth to be with the saviour whom he had served so many years. Mr. Cochran was born near Lewistown Miss.? county on Oct. 13, 1811. On Nov. 19, 1836 he married Miss Nancy Clark who survives him, as well as five children, two daughters and three sons. In 1852 he emigrated to Oregon and in 1857 is family came to share with him, the joys and sorrows of a pioneer life. Most of the last 30 years has been spent in and near Amity, Yamhill County, Oregon. His health had been declining for about six years but since November last, he had been confined to his room and bed most of the time till his death. His son, James Cochran, came from his home in western Washington to Amity and tended him, along with his devoted wife and relatives, to perform the last sad duty to a loved husband and father. Well did they anticipate his wishes and tenderly guarded and tended him. In his death the church has lost a worthy member and the community a valued citizen. ---- On May 29, 1882, the Reaper gathered into the heavenly garner the spirit of Mrs. Caroline Walker, wife of Henry A. Walker, and eldest daughter of W. and Mary Thurman of Amity, Yamhill County, Oregon, after a brief but severe illness, aged 27 years and 4 months. She died at the residence of J.W. Martin. She was and had been a member of the Christian church for 15 years. She was the life and light of her home circle and in her social sphere was loving and loveable. Her piety, pleasantry and refined manners endeared her to a large circle of friends; and by which she still lives, in the hearts of those she has left behind. She was the mother of four children, who with husband, father and mother, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends, deeply feel their loss and yet from this sad bereavement comes the comforting thought and fact that she was prepared to pass in triumph, from the trials and sorrows of earth to the paradise of God at last. Without a struggle, she sank quietly and pleasantly to sleep. " Yes Asleep in Jesus, oh, how sweet, to be for such a slumber meet, for hope looks beyond the bounds of time, when what we now deplore, shall rise in full immortal bloom, to live and fade no more.
