In 1859 he embraced Christianity and joined the Methodist Protestant Church. He subsequently entered the ministry of that Church, laboring on Albany, Canaan, Sterling, and Auburn Circuits with acceptability. In 1872 he joined Wyoming Conference on trial and was sent to Stoddartsville, and in 1873 appointed to Newport. His labors during the winter on his charge were blessed with a good revival. But a little while before he would have been received into full membership in the Conference he died from the effect of an accidental pistol shot, on March 30, 1874.
