Compiled by J. Edward Carpenter, Brevet-Major of Volunteers, Formerly Captain, Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry; Treasurer of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, &c. Philadelphia: Allen, Lane & Scott's Printing House, Nos. 229, 231 and 233 South Fifth Street, 1886. [3] The following list, the result of considerable labor and care, is believed to be substantially correct. Much of the data required to make it, is in my possession, in the shape of letters written from the Regiment in the field, and a diary of events covering a portion of the time during which it was in active service. For the rest, reports of the commanders of the Regiment, and of the Cavalry Corps, the Division, and the Brigade in which it served; the summary of operations reported in the returns of the Regiment, and of the commands to which it was attached, beside many other sources of information, have been consulted. If this meager recital serves to recall to the memories of those who took an honorable part in them, some of the scenes through which they passed, I shall feel amply repaid for my pains. This list, which amounts to a bare outline of the brilliant services of the Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry in the late war, and does not include some of the minor affairs in which it was engaged, was complied with a view to future amplification into a narrative or history of the operations of the Regiment. As, however, the opportunity to carry out this plan may be delayed for a considerable time, I have decided to give to my comrades the result of my labor to this extent, without waiting to perform the more elaborate task.
