SAMUEL PETER, born in Pennsylvania September 30, 1805. Graduated at West Point 1826. Fought through Seminole and Mexican wars. Commissioned colonel of 17th Infantry and fought at Bull Run where he was wounded. Commanded 3d corps at Williamsburg. Commissioned major-general of volunteers. Participated at Fair Oaks, and made brigadier in regular service. Fought through the Peninsula campaign, was with Pope in the Virginia campaign, and fought at second battle of Bull Run. In command of Washington defenses, and distinguished himself at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Relieved, October, 1863. Afterwards commanded Northern Department, and was retired, 1869, with rank of major-general. Died May 1, 1880.
