He was reared on a farm, and early in life became a qualified miller and shoe-maker. Being of a mechanical turn of mind, in 1850, he began to repair clocks and watches without having any instruction. He had an old watch which needed repairing and had been condemned by other workmen. He took it apart, studied its mechanism, found out its defects, repaired it, and used it as a regulator for many years. He had since continued to repair clocks and watches, and has the reputation of being the best watch-maker and repairer in Adams County. He keeps constantly on hand and for sale a large stock of watches and jewelry, and seems to be peculiarly qualified for this delicate mechanical business. Mr. Elder has been very successful and has a comfortable property. He married Anna Mary M., daughter of Jonas Raunzahn.
